In Holland we have a lot of words for rain.
Most of the words are negative and the reasons are simple.
We Dutch people are masters in whining in general and even better in complaining about the weather.
To describe every mood en feeling of every kind of rain we developed a lot of words for it.
The phrase "It is raining cats and dogs" is not from the Dutch vocabulary.
I went to my friend Google to find out where this English saying is coming from.
And the verdict is not an unanimous.
The most common one says that in olden times, homes had thatched roofs in which
domestic animals such as cats and dogs would like to hide.
In heavy rain, the animals would either be washed out of the thatch,
or rapidly abandon it for better shelter, so it would seem to be raining cats and dogs.
In this picture a literally translation of that phrase.
